Native trees, shrubs, groundcovers and vines spring from the ground plane in a vibrant counterpoint to more formal, hanging vertical green elements.

Sjövikstorget-by-Thorbjörn-Andersson-with-Sweco-architects-04bStockholm is a city on the water. The city landscape is an archipelago consisting of a mosaic of hilly, convex islands. This is the essential quality of the Swedish capital. Sjövikstorget square makes use of this quality. It opens up towards the water and thus includes the larger landscape in its design. To underscore this basic idea, the square is laid out as a flat plane which has then been tilted 3 % towards the view.

The differences of levels of the garden evoke the platform, the 42 meters long bench calls back the length of trains and seats in the past. The impression of speed is translated by the linearity of coverings and by the organization of the vegetable pallet. The whole project is centered around identity elements such as the metallic blades on the ground, which object reference in rails and a model of lighting which reminds the drawing of the catenary posts.

© A. Jungmann, J. JiroutekThe main idea behind the design of the reconstructed square in Frýdlant was to create an open, unobstructed public space – a square that allows residents and visitors to enjoy all types of activities. The use of three types of paving tiles, two types of stone and the patterns in which these were laid differentiates various types of spaces on the square.

© Alan JensenThe goal set by Oldenzaal’s city council for the redesign of St. Plechelmus square was to make it the most beautiful square in Twente. St. Plechelmus square lies in the heart of Oldenzaal; it is the city’s landmark and terminus for the country roads that lead to the square. The oldest sections of the cathedral date from the twelfth century and its colourful stained glass windows, dating from the nineteenth century, make the cathedral truly unique.

© Bureau B+BThe nautical character of Zierikzee is still conspicuous in the centre and the relationship with water is strong, partly due to the visible ebb and flow of the tides. The small city owes its monumental, richly decorated houses to a history of sea trade. Where fishing villages can sometimes be sober in their expression, Zierikzee seems to possess a rich culture of beautification.

© Arjen SmitzAfter completing the urban design plan for the city centre, Bureau B+B created a design for the public space. The position of the new city centre on a mainly raised surface level made planting directly into the ground in the public space almost impossible. This is why the ‘Blooming City' theme was introduced as the leitmotif in the design of the pavement, street furniture and plant compartments. The theme reinforces the city’s identity, making it recognizable as a ‘new town’.

© TN+The introduction of an underground car park in the city-centre at the Square of the Liberation in Troyes was the original reason of the re-qualification of the area. Thanks to the construction works of the underground structure and the clearing of some existing trees, a major perspective opened up towards the cathedral, making it obvious that a larger perimeter should be taken into account when rethinking the city center, including three city gardens and the Seine Chanel.
